difference between a Jacuzzi, spa, and hot tub

You’ve probably heard of the terms “spa”, “Jacuzzi” and “hot tub”. You may also have an idea of what the terms mean. Many people confuse these words. But what are the differences? Or do they all mean the same? In this article, we explain! We’re happy to provide clarification in this area and tell you the difference between all these terms and types. This way you’ll soon be able to make a good choice, and you’ll know what you are talking about!

What is a spa?

Let’s start with a spa. A spa is a small square or round pool. Another word for a spa is a bubble bath! You can completely relax in a spa on your own or enjoy yourself with a few other people. A spa can be placed indoors but is usually outside, for example, in the backyard. Spas are increasingly sold to private individuals because they are quite affordable these days. Previously, you only saw spas in wellness centers and at large villas or yachts. It is certainly no longer the case!

The origin of the word spa

The word spa has its origin in Latin and stands for Salus Per Aquam or Sanitas Per Aqua. If we translate this literally, it means “healthy through water”. By a spa, we take a warm water bath with bubble and mechanical massage jets. Spa baths have a massaging and relaxing effect on the body, which benefits health. The literal meaning “healthy through water” is therefore very appropriate. You could argue that the word “spa” is the umbrella name for this type of bath. If you want to hire a spa, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve a very wide range of different types of spas.

Besides being wonderful to go to a spa, the warm bubbling water also has several health benefits. For example, it is good against stress and muscle pain. It increases your resistance not to catch a cold as quickly, and it cleans your skin.

What is a hot tub?

We now understand what a spa is. A hot tub is broadly the same as a spa. You can actually call a hot tub a forerunner of the spa or Jacuzzi. It is a round bath with warm water. A significant difference, however, is that a traditional hot tub is made entirely of wood. Because this is not very convenient, now there are also hot tubs with a plastic tub. The exterior is still made of wood so that it retains the classic hot tub look. In the past, hot tubs were also heated with wood. Now, the hot tub has received so many upgrades, such as acrylic tubs and electric heating, that it now also resembles a spa.

What is a Jacuzzi?

The word jacuzzi is often used to refer to a hot tub. But the real connoisseurs know that there is only one Jacuzzi, and that is a Jacuzzi®. Jacuzzi is the surname of the brothers who invented the ‘Jacuzzi’. It is simply an American brand that was founded by the Italian immigrant: Candido Enzo Jacuzzi. In 1915, the Jacuzzi brothers started a company in California that produced aircraft parts and irrigation systems.  The son of Candido Jacuzzi suffered from rheumatoid arthritis. He developed a portable pump that produced a pleasant flow of water and air in a bathtub. This laid the foundation for hydrotherapy and the now world-famous spa baths with massage jets.

Many people think that a Jacuzzi and spa are the same things. A Jacuzzi is a spa, but a spa is not always a Jacuzzi. Jacuzzi is a name of a brand! However, many people simply mean a spa when they talk about a “Jacuzzi”, rather than specifically the brand. This is because the Jacuzzi is by far the best-known spa brand.
